Aufguss Sauna
An Aufguss (German for “infusion”) is a specific sauna ritual originating in Germany and widely practiced across Central and Northern Europe. It transforms a standard dry sauna session into a dynamic, sensory experience focused on heat distribution and aromatherapy.
During an Aufguss, a sauna master (Saunameister) pours water or ice infused with essential oils (such as eucalyptus, pine, citrus, or menthol) over hot stones. Unlike a standard sauna where users might add water themselves, the Aufguss is a guided ceremony. The master uses a large towel to fan the hot steam vigorously throughout the room, ensuring even heat distribution and intensifying the perceived temperature without necessarily raising the thermometer reading significantly.
