Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is one of the most widely recognized forms of massage therapy in the Western world, developed in the 19th century by the Dutch Johann Georg Mezger, based on the Swedish medical gymnastics pionnered by Per Henrik Ling.

Swedish massage is sometimes referred to as “classic massage” and can be considered the basis for other Western massage forms, notably Californian and Hawaiian.

It focuses on relaxing the entire body by stimulating the muscles with movements of different types:

  • Effleurage: Long, gliding movements used to warm up the muscle tissue.

  • Friction: Deep, circular or cross-fiber movements to create heat and break down scar tissue.

  • Petrissage: Kneading movements that help release tension and break up muscle knots.

  • Tapotement: Rhythmic tapping or percussive movements to stimulate muscles.

  • Vibration: Shaking or trembling movements to loosen tight areas.
